Wisconsin Chippewa Myths & Tales and Their Relation to Chippewa Life by Victor Barnouw (University of Wisconsin Press, 1977)

There's a lot of good stuff in this book.  I love reading myths.  Looking at myths from a contemporary viewpoint is an interesting thought experiment when trying to figure out 1) what they mean on their own and 2) if/how the myths can be applied nowadays.

For me, what was most interesting was a short appendix about the "possible use of amanita muscaria by a chippewa shaman."  There is some contention in the literature and amongst scholars about the veracity of the use of fly agaric by Ojibwa/Chippewa shamans.  I believe that it is likely, due to this appendix by Barnouw and by "the Legend of Miskwedo" by Keewadinoquay that Anisnaabeg shamans used amanita muscaria - a psychotropic mushroom with it's own very long and very contentious history.
